Telemedicine is the use of advanced technology to help geographically distant physicians consult with each other on difficult patient cases. It allows medical experts around the world to share their experience and knowledge to improve patient care. Physicians can use live Internet and videoconferencing technologies to share digitized images such as x-rays, CT scans, angiograms and echocardiograms.

Internet technology can be used to communicate in real time with specialists in other parts of the country or the world. For example, an orthopaedic specialist in California, can see a patient's range of motion in Hong Kong. Or an otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat specialist) in Belgium can see a live video of a bronchoscopy to help diagnose a patient's throat problems in Canada.
