On the morning of June 26 in Xi'an, we will connect to CERNET, the global Internet, and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford. Xi'an physicians who are caring for the two children will discuss diagnosis and treatment with pediatricians at UCSF Stanford Health Care using Internet teleconferencing on Sun workstations. The physicians will communicate through workstations that have teleconferencing, whiteboard, and chat capabilities. Their consultation will continue for approximately ninety minutes. The event will show the Internet as it currently is in Western China, not as we would wish it to be. The technology exists to support real-time video- and teleconferencing, but the capacity of the networks is limited. After the demonstration (at 10:00 a.m.), participants will meet informally to discuss future scenarios for telemedicine. Officials from China and sponsors from the US will make brief statements, and meet individually. On the morning of June 27th at 8:00 a.m. (5:00 p.m. June 26 in California), we will reconnect to CERNET and the global Internet and UCSF Stanford Health Care and conduct a second demonstration for the benefit of medical college leaders and physicians from the Xi'an region, to introduce the technology and its applications. |
