There are several important purposes of the demonstration:

• to dramatize the fact that our similarities are greater than our differences, and that we are bound together by common concern for our children and our desires for their better and healthier lives
• to highlight successful people-to-people interaction and cooperation in the health sector between China and the US
• to acknowledge support of American corporations, foundations, and institutions who have made the demonstration possible
• to bring greater attention to the needs fro health care in rural China and to the potential of new communications and computer technologies to engage doctors and others in China and around the world who care to help
• to spotlight the children whose cases will be discussed, and draw more interest to children's health and poverty alleviation needs
• to encourage future development of telemedicine in China particularly between urban centers such as XMU and the countryside
• to strengthen the personal, professional and institutional relationships that lead to real progress
