  • Long-Term Effectiveness of Walking Training in Patients With Knee Osteoarthritis

    Nearly one out of every two Americans will develop knee osteoarthritis by age 85. Over 20 million Americans, including nearly three million Veterans, currently have painful knee arthritis that limits their daily activity or recreation. The vast majority of those individuals will be prescribed anti-inflammatory drugs that provide some pain relief but do not slow the progression of the disease. Often people with knee arthritis are told they must live with the pain until they become appropriate candidates for knee replacement surgery, but that can require tolerating the pain and limiting function for many years. Because of other health issues, some individuals are never acceptable surgery candidates. What is desperately needed are better conservative approaches for treating these patients. Two such approaches will be tested and compared in this study.

  • Hypnosis for Symptom Management in Elective Orthopedic Surgery

    The purpose of the study is to determine if teaching self-hypnosis techniques to patients prior to knee replacement surgery will decrease their pain medication requirements, pain medication side-effects, length of stay in the hospital, readmission rates, pain, anxiety, physical function, satisfaction scores, and cost of admission.

  • The Effect of Adipose-Derived Stem Cells for Knee Osteoarthritis

    The purpose of this study is to compare the clinical and functional outcomes of patients with mild to moderate arthroscopically confirmed osteoarthritis between the following two groups:

    1. Partial fat pad harvest with Adipose-Derived Stem Cell (ADSC) transplantation with standard arthroscopic treatment consisting of: partial meniscectomy, cartilage stabilization, loose body removal and selective synovectomy.

    2. Standard arthroscopic treatment (above) with out cell transplant.

  • Subchondroplasty® Knee RCT

    This is a multi-center, prospective, single-blinded, two-arm study, randomized to include 134 subjects treated with Subchondroplasty (SCP) + Arthroscopy and 67 subjects with arthroscopy alone.

    The primary objective of this study is to demonstrate superiority of Subchondroplasty with arthroscopy compared to arthroscopy alone for treatment of Bone Marrow Lesions (BMLs) in the knee.

  • Gait Modifications and Cutaneous Stimulation

    The purpose of this study is to quantify differences in joint mechanics between different types of walking in healthy individuals and individuals with knee pathology. The investigators will determine how modifying gait through feedback and/or cutaneous stimulation changes joint loading.

  • TMS for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

    The aim of the current study is to assess the efficacy of TMS in the treatment of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). It is hypothesized that participants who receive TMS (Group 1) relative to sham treatment (Group 2) once daily for two days will demonstrate a greater improvement in CRPS-related pain and other associated symptomology (i.e., cognitive, emotional and physical) compared to baseline. Participants will be followed until they reach their baseline for two consecutive weeks to assess safety and duration of symptom alleviation.

  • Adipose-Derived Stem Cell Injections for Knee Osteoarthritis

    This is a non-surgical trial comparing the clinical and functional outcomes of patients with osteoarthritis treated with Intra-articular injection of autologous Adipose-Derived Stem Cells (ADSC) combined with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) versus conventional therapy of Intra-articular injection of corticosteroid.
