Stanford Stroke Center

The Stanford Stroke Center is devoted to improving the lives of patients who have suffered a stroke.  Established in 1992, the Stanford Stroke Center was one of the first comprehensive organization in the United States focused on stroke diagnosis, treatment, research, and education.  The Center is home to a large team of neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, nurse specialists, basic scientists, and clinical researchers. Over the years, our team has cared for tens of thousands of patients, has trained dozens of stroke specialists in our fellowship programs, and has been an international leader in the development of new stroke treatments through groundbreaking research.

Gregory W. Albers, MD
Director, Stanford Stroke Center

Professor of Neurology and Neurological Sciences

The Stanford Stroke Center was founded in 1992 by vascular neurologist Gregory Albers, MD, interventional neuroradiologists Michael Marks, MD, and vascular neurosurgeon Gary Steinberg, MD, PhD. Together they continue to direct the Stanford Stroke program today. In, 2000 the Center added a Neurocritical Care Program. Clinically, the Stroke Center is among the busiest in the country. The Stanford Stroke Center was the first hospital in the United States to meet The Joint Commission's standards for Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification.  Stanford, in conjunction with its affiliated sites, has consistently been one of the highest enrolling sites nationally in acute stroke treatment trials, imaging-based stroke studies and stroke prevention trials. The center has maintained continuous grant support from the NINDS since its inception and currently has multiple active NIH grants focused on stroke diagnosis. The Center has well established fellowship programs in vascular neurology, neurointerventional radiology, vascular neurosurgery and neurocritical care to train the future leaders in clinical stroke research.

Stanford Stroke Recovery Program

Marion Buckwalter, MD, PhD
Co-Director, Stroke Recovery Program
Professor of Neurology & Neurosurgery

Maarten Lansberg, MD, PhD
Co-Director, Stroke Recovery Program
Professor of Neurology

The Stanford Stroke Recovery Program is dedicated to improving the function and quality of life of stroke survivorsBased at Stanford University, the Program is uniquely positioned to bridge the barriers between neuroscience, engineering, and clinical research, to develop new therapies for stroke survivors.  The Program brings together world-renowned scientists from a wide variety of disciplines, including stroke neurology, neurosurgery, neuroscience, engineering, radiology, neuroimmunology, and genetics. Our multi-disciplinary team of scientists is constantly innovating to develop new treatments that will improve gait, arm function and cognition after stroke.  The medical innovations developed in our laboratories span a wide array, including immune-modulating therapies, stem-cell therapies, non-invasive brain stimulation (TMS), and medical devices developed by Stanford engineers.  Our team of clinical scientists conducts trials to tests how effective these new treatments are at improving the symptoms of stroke survivors.
